Alcatraz

The famous Alcatraz (an island about 1.5 miles off the coast of San Francisco, California) is best known for it's years as a federal penitentiary where it held infamous cons like Al Capone.  Rich with history, Alcatraz started as a military fortification.  Six years after Alcatraz closed it's doors as a penitentiary, 1969,  a group of Native Americans of all tribes claimed the small island as "Indian Land".  They stayed there for 19 months before peacefully escorted off.  You can still see graffiti from this event like shown in the first image.

Alcatraz was surprisingly beautiful.  They have gardens there and the island also provides a sanctuary for birds.   The history and stories behind it were enthralling.  It was well worth the half day we spent exploring this legend of a place.

When we went to visit San Fran my hubby was so upset because all of the tickets were sold out to go over there ~ on the bright side that gives us an excuse to go back. Glad you had fun. I get the feeling you have fun no matter where you are! xo
